All of this has liberated the area round people’s homes for children to play and neighbours to socialise, in the way people used to before traffic and parking took over most neighbourhoods (Figure 13.15 to Figure 13.17). It’s not just the kids who benefit: a study in Vienna showed how residents of a carfree development had more friends and knew more people in their neighbourhood than residents of a comparable conventional development nearby.322
